Experienced cancer care professional to lead regional cancer program for Waterloo Wellington area

(Friday, July 4, 2008) -- Grand River Hospital and Cancer Care Ontario are pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Craig McFadyen as the new regional vice president responsible for the Grand River Regional Cancer Centre and the Waterloo Wellington Regional Cancer Program.

"We are pleased Dr. McFadyen will provide his leadership to the hospital’s cancer program and the regional cancer service," said Cancer Care Ontario President and CEO Terry Sullivan. "Waterloo Wellington residents receive excellent cancer care services. Dr. McFadyen’s work will support on-going advancement throughout the continuum of cancer care."

Dr. McFadyen will lead the continued provision of cancer services within the Grand River Regional Cancer Centre and the Waterloo Wellington Local Health Integration Network in collaboration with regional partners. According to Cancer Care Ontario quality of care measures, Waterloo Wellington patients benefit from:

  • The best access to radiation therapy in the province at the Grand River Regional Cancer Centre (GRRCC);
  • The second-shortest wait times in the province for access to chemotherapy at GRRCC; and
  • A significant reduction in wait times between a physician’s referral to surgery for breast cancer (from 114 to 35 days) at the Waterloo Wellington Breast Centre.

Dr. McFadyen has been the medical director for surgical oncology at the Waterloo Wellington Regional Cancer Program since 2004. He has led and participated in initiatives including:

  • A local health integration network surgical oncology community of practice;
  • Surgical wait times reductions and the development of multi-disciplinary case conferences;
  • The Waterloo Wellington Breast Centre and the pilot Rapid Access Diagnostic Assessment Unit for lung cancer; and
  • Best practices for cancer surgery within the local health integration network.

Dr. McFadyen graduated from the University of Calgary’s School of Medicine in 1982. He completed his residency in General Surgery in June 1988 at the University of Toronto, and a Fellowship in Vascular Surgery at Sunnybrook Medical Centre in 1989. He is enrolled in the Master’s of Health Care Management Program at Harvard University. He will continue to maintain an active surgical practice.

Sue Robertson, the acting vice president of regional cancer services for the past 18 months, will remain with the Grand River Regional Cancer Centre in an associate vice-president role.
